Did you see the actions the next day? Galarraga presented the line-up card for Detroit at the home plate umpire-coahes meeting. Joyce was crying and gave a playful chuck to Galarraga's shoulder after the meeting. The team also gave Galarraga a corvette for his efforts! All in all an amazing story as you have said.

What, are you crazy Susan? Wanting your kids to be a writer? Living half of their life in make-believe worlds, totally alone, eeking out an existence on little or no pay... I'm inclined to believe and hope that the desire to write is a mutation born soley out of rare human conditions and not subject to genetic familial heredity. The creativity gene passes on automatically, hopefully manifesting in rich and productive ways. The human mechanism for counteracting any gene for obsessive storytelling can usually be labeled as 'teenage rebellion' and thank God for it!

The Vilardi Library is always open. Guy wants to buy me a Kindle for my birthday in a few days. I am adamantly opposed. I am KNOWN for my library in my 'hood. I get phone calls almost weekly from friends who want to come by and get a new book. I love to touch a book and then hand it off to someone else saying "Ohhhh...you'll LOVE this one... it's about..."

I agree. Some people have the ability to multi-task. Pilots are a good example as are police officers. Pilots must guide their aircraft by maintaining course in three directions (not just one like a car)while at the same time communicating with ATC and managing a multitude of instruments. Obviously doable but only with hours of training.

Others unfortunately cannot walk and chew gum at the same time. Putting them behind the wheel is dangerous enough. Putting a cell phone and other gadgets at their disposal is a disaster waiting to happen.

Put up your cell phones while in a moving vehicle. Get a blue-tooth headset or a car with blue-tooth. And most of all, yield when you hear sirens and see flashing lights.

Hard to imagine the laser focus that one must have to reach that level of perfection. Wonder if perfection is contagious. Guess who threw out the first pitch for the game that Cone pitched? Don Larsen. His claim to fame? He was the first Yankee to pitch a perfect game.

The 70's hurricane was named Fredrick and hit Pensacola sometime in September 79. Having lived with Susan's family for about a month as an exchange student Fredrick was something unexpected and exciting. Of course I had heard of hurricanes but never in my wildest dreams had I imagined to be involved in that extent.
I had learned that there was a scanner in the house, and knew that it was on all the time, didn't listen to it and never thought more of it.
We were all busy with the hurricane preparations and I remember vividly Susan's mother running down the stairs as a police vehicle drove in front of the house. Yes, we left soon after that and drove somewhere more safe over night. I even remember holding on to Susan at some point as she was almost blown away with the wind.
I enjoyed reading the book, could not put it down. It brought back so many memories and made me think of my year in Pensacola, and especially Susan's Mom, Kathleen. I kept trying to place the people in the book. Do I know this person?
Susan, you write with such an ease that it is impossible to put the book down. I had to start it anew after finishing it. Could you write another one? Please.
